The 7 Skills of a Lean Leader

The 7 Skills of a Lean Leader

The 7 Skills of a Lean Leader

Many leaders still think that “Lean” is something that is the preserve of manufacturing companies.  You are potentially missing out on huge business improvement opportunities as Lean is all about preserving the Value that the customer wants and delivering it with less work (lowering costs).  In this Industry Week article by Jill Jusko, Dan Ariens CEO of manufacturer Ariens Co. explains that implementing lean “was never about manufacturing.  It was all about business.”

What is a key part of the understanding of being a Lean Leader is that the journey is the destination.  Any approach that treats the transformation to lean as a project is destined to be just that.  At 2Win we help people understand the skills of lean leadership.  The eighth skill that is missing from Ariens list is “Laser like Customer Focus.”  Leaders need to instil a culture of satisfying internal and external customers otherwise the Leader risks taking the business off track.  At 2Win we work with you to help master the understanding that the journey is the destination of Lean Leadership.  Read more on the 7 skills in the article and comment if you agree or not with me about the missing piece. http://www.industryweek.com/lean-six-sigma/ariens-seven-skills-lean-leader

Have your say in ISO14000

Have your say in ISO14000

Have your say in ISO14000 the worlds’ best known Environmental management standard.

With over ¼ of a million certificates of conformity to the standard issued across 158 countries it’s a well-established standard.  But in 2015 it is due to be changed.  If you’ve operated an Environmental Management system you will know that there are big benefits to be achieved in managing your waste effectively.  However the legislative requirements imposed by government both in UK and EU can make it your environmental compliance a chore.  With these thoughts in mind you can have your say about how to make the next version of ISO14000 a “leaner” standard?  I believe that the incorporation of the process based approach used in ISO9000 will be a benefit to all (including the reduction in written procedures and reduce the amount of paper recycling).  Learn how to make your views count. http://www.iso.org/iso/home/news_index/news_archive/news.htm?refid=Ref1713

Over 25 Years of Success in Quality Management

Over 25 Years of Success in Quality Management

Over 25 Years of Success in Quality Management.

The passing of the HRH the Queens’ Golden Jubilee also saw the passing of the ISO 9000 Silver Jubilee in 2013.  There will be a planned revision to the standard in 2015.  So what does your organisation need to be doing to transition?  I can remember the change from the 2000 to 2008 revision.  Businesses were given 2 years to transition to what was quite a major change (much the better too).  I do not think that the latest changes will be as major but given that the upgrade cycle worked for the last transition, I think the same process will apply for the next change. At 2Win consulting we have helped many businesses implement and gain the benefits from running an effective Quality management system and make sustained improvements.  To many of our clients, having the ISO certificate of conformity is the icing on the cake as they accrue significant benefits from a systemised business.

Since the economic and financial crisis themes of sustainable economies, social corporate responsibility and environmental integrity have come to the fore.  A new era of responsible capitalism has been ushered in.  What new themes are also to be built into the new ISO 9000 standard to ensure it lasts another 25 years? http://www.iso.org/iso/home/news_index/news_archive/news.htm?refid=Ref1633

Business is Great Britain

Business is Great Britain

Business is Great Britain. The Government wants to do more to ensure (Welsh) businesses take advantage of every opportunity to expand into new markets.  With the recovery expected to be driven by the private sector and especially SME’s then every little helps.  There are positive signs that this is happening in Wales too with the increase in inward investment and job creation over that past couple of years.
At 2Win we have helped as part of this growth by being awarded the “Specialist Advisor” role on behalf of Welsh Government to help Welsh businesses gain Investors in People award.  We are playing our part in helping businesses make more profit and retain their competitive edge.  As long as Nick Baird and David Jones continue to help good businesses get better through lowering the costs of support then competitiveness of Welsh business will continue.  The more schemes that support trade without the barriers of entry (red tape barriers) then we will support initiatives like the UKTI offers.  More details are in the article. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-trade-investment-ceo-outlines-support-available-to-welsh-companies

£230 billion worth of annual public sector contracts

£230 billion worth of annual public sector contracts

The Government has further opened up the £230 billion worth of annual public sector contracts to small and micro-businesses. According to Lord Young, the Prime Minister’s Enterprise Adviser, this undertaking is vital to boosting the UK economy.  The government has set a target of getting 25% of its annual expenditure to SME’s by 2015 but without taking positive actions to help SME’s nothing will change.  There are some excellent recommendations in this article, especially the abolishment of the PQQ on contracts <200,000 euros.  There have been may discussions around a common PQQ that are still not in place, so this proposal will go a long way to helping reduce the  administrative burdens of tendering for SME’s.

At 2Win consulting we specialise in helping firms become more profitable through more effective tendering.  Many of our customers find it difficult and a costly burden in completing PQQ’s so legislation to reduce this cost is welcome.   If PQQ’s and winning tenders is on your list of priorities and you find you just haven’t got the time to get it all done, then we can help ease your pressure.  I hope that the legislation proposed to just comes into place quickly.  This will be a win-win for public and private sector alike.  https://www.gov.uk/government/news/micro-business-boost-will-transform-the-economy–2

Continuous improvement is not and “add on”

Continuous improvement is not and “add on”

Continuous improvement is not and “add on” to your business and your employees are not the problem.

70% of improvement efforts in change fail or have partial results because they fail to learn the pattern of success.  I agree with Claire Schooley that there is a pattern to successful change as well as unsuccessful.  What is not often recognised it that there is a fine balance between the two.  But the most common success factor to improvement efforts being lasting is adopting the mind-set that continuous improvement it is a journey not a destination.

At 2Win we have both process excellence and people magic skills to help your business become even more profitable.   Do you agree with the patterns of successful change?

What goes around comes around.

What goes around comes around.

What goes around comes around.

Transforming your business model for sustainability is what Philips is doing by “unleashing” circular principles of reduce, reuse and recycle that have been at the heart of ISO 14000 EMS since its foundation. Whilst Philips has remained a leader in innovation over the years by investing >7% of sales revenue into R&D, its “circular approach” described in this article is not new, despite the claims. At 2Win we have spent years helping implement management systems and change, particularly in environmental management. Reduce, reuse and recycle are the underlying principles to the elimination of waste and it is where the re-manufacturing, refurbishment and recycling industries were born. This article shows that you can apply the same approach to management practices, as long as you give it a new name “circular principles”

Battling with rising costs yet afraid to raise your prices?

Battling with rising costs yet afraid to raise your prices?

Battling with rising costs yet afraid to raise your prices?

Proven methodologies yield results every time, just make sure that they are not a management fad.  If reducing costs was easy you would already have implemented the necessary changes.  However, like all changes it is typically a continuous process of erosion requiring lots of small actions that add up to a big difference.

That is how we at 2Win Consulting help you improve the profitability and agree with the approach and tactics adopted by Bruce Nolop in this article in the Wall Street Journal.  Ownership is key to success that is why at 2Win we work with you so you have the knowledge transferred from the experience of working with us.   Working smarter and doing less are the keys to lowering costs.  So what can you do? http://blogs.wsj.com/experts/2013/07/23/bruce-nolop-the-hard-work-of-improving-productivity/
